i have never been a fan of plays but i have a newfound appreciation for the material on which the play is based. i can count with my hands the plays that i have read (there are only 4 of them and 1 is even a required reading for humanities 1 back in college).
last sunday, i was having an insomniac's night (or should i say wee hours of the morning) and i was seized by an urge to pass by time with a book (it's been ages since i have last held a book). considering that a novel would be too long, i picked out a play entitled "A Raisin in the Sun." (by the way, i have learned that 3 or 4 years back, P. Diddy took part in this play when it was staged in L.A., but i bought this book way before that :)
the line from whence the title is based is especially striking. it goes:
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore -
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over
Like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
Like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
- Montage of a Dream by Langston Hughes
what i like about plays is that, the lines are pithy and catchy. more than that, it is so possible to finish it in one sitting :)
hm..maybe i should also start scouring for them when i am in a book surplus shop :)
