Corruption on Harapan

just as i was about to call it a night, i switched on the TV monitor hoping to catch the late night news. the news has just ended but ABS-CBN's "Harapan" was just about to air. the topic that was discussed revolved around the issue of corruption, what it is, how it is done, what is being done about it, and of course, the latest WGI (world governance index) released by the world bank which is alarming in its findings because the Philippines is now officially THE MOST CORRUPT of them all Asian countries.

i must admit, even when i knew that the arguments would be rehashed and only the details would vary, i was glued to the TV set. i was waiting for what Mr. Golez (as representative of the Malacanang) had to say.. and what he had to say really incensed the tibak in me. imagine, he had the temerity to say that the WGI is made up of several components and corruption is only one of them and not the entirety of the WGI. moreover, he even bragged about the unprecedented record of the GMA government in terms of foiling tax evaders, generating more revenue, yada yada yada.

at that point, i turned the TV off. i could not tolerate anything related to politics anymore because even back in college when political science was my chosen branch of social science to major in, i have already become apolitical..and yet, it is not ironic. not as ironic as our Inang Bayan having a rich history of toppling down corrupt leaders only to be NOW faced with the very same ills that were thwarted some 20 years ago.

i don't know if it's apathy, or Alzheimer's or simply the idea of robbing from the nation's coffers with impunity (Marcos was just exiled, Erap was pardoned and Gloria is still President).

the Pinoys who have died during the martial law era died a futile death and they must all be turning in their graves right now at the latest achievement of the Philippines, the NUMBER ONE AMONG THE MOST CORRUPT IN ASIA.

hail all you politicians!! in Korina's words, "wala na ata kayong mga kaluluwa.."
