in philosophy, generalizing is one form of fallacy and can be related to another form of fallacy called non sequitur (it does not follow). the whole cannot be judged acoording to the actions of one nor does it follow that the act of one is also done by others within the same group (even if it is a group who is notorious for its concerted action through an authority figure's mandate).
after all, as the wise Dumbledore would have it, "it is our choices that set us apart from the others." notwithstanding the fact that the fruit can very well be characteristic of the tree, if and when the fruit happens to be rotting or becomes rotten, to a great extent the fruit is culpable and not the tree. this is because, everybody is gifted with free will.
the lesson: be accountable for every word spoken, every deed committed, every omission and accept the fact that humanity comes with limitations which is somehow an excuse for doing lousy things to other people but is never meant as a license to inflict pain on others.
