it is a tough job defending people who are accused of doing an act which are allegedly punishable under the law, but it has to be done. that is what lawyers are for.
i have been assigned to research on a rape case. they are not easy because somehow, the law would tilt in favor of the "victim" even when our Constitution guarantees the right of an accused to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise. there is a seeming branding for persons (usually males) accused of committing rape, i.e. that they are dangerous because they cannot keep their "jimmies" in their pants. i, for one had done the branding thing. but now, i have to shift perspectives because we are taking the side of the accused's defense.
in this particular case, i cannot help but be torn. i sympathize with the victim but i also am bound to help the accused. their conflicting statements make it worse because in rape cases, credence is lent to the accusations of the victim considering that the act involves only the two of them. the difficulty lies in disproving the allegations of the victim when the only witnesses to the act are the accused and the victim.
i do not know how this case will turn out. i just hope that during the trial, the truth would come out as to what had really transpired. otherwise, there is injustice.
